Seizure of indigenous land, 1776-1887

1783 – US and Britain end the war; US an independent nation
1804-1806 – Lewis & Clark Expedition contacts tribes of Pacific Northwest / Northern Rockies
1821 – California and Southwest are liberated from Spain, become Mexican
1824 – Bureau of Indian Affairs is created
1830 – Indian Removal Act passed, deportations from Southeast begin
1846-1848 – Beginning
of California Gold Rush; Mexican-American War; mass Mormon migration
onto indigenous lands in Great Basin begins without receiving formal
land transfer from tribes to US federal government
1850 – Treaty of Fort Laramie establishes reservations for Sioux, Crow, Cheyenne, and Arapaho
1850 – California becomes a US state
1862 – The Apache War begins
1863 – The Colorado War begins (Cheyenne, Sioux, Arapaho vs US Army, in High Plains); Idaho Territory
1865– Civil War ends; many Southerners migrate to the West
1864-1868 – The Snake War (Shoshone, Bannock tribes vs US Army, in Great Basin)
1869 – First Transcontinental Railroad is completed
1874-1875 – The Comanche War (in West Texas)
1876 – The
Great Sioux War, including the Battle of Little Bighorn (Sitting Bull,

1877 – The Nez Perce War; Chief Joseph leads heroic Nez Perce march through Idaho/Montana
1880 – Railroad to Santa Fe is completed
1886 – Geronimo surrenders, finally ending the Apache War
1887 – The
Dawes Act passed by US Congress, shrinking the amount of land given to
indigenous reservations and granting white settlers many land titles

1889 – Washington and Montana Territories become US states
1890 – Idaho and Wyoming become US states
1890 – Wounded Knee Massacre, on 29 December; this is commonly given in colonizers’ textbooks as an endpoint for “the Indian Wars”

1867 – The Alaskan Purchase from the Russian

1887 – The Hawaiian Rebellions begin

1898 – The Spanish–American War; the US gains Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines. Hawai’i is annexed to the union.

1916 – Treaty of the Danish West Indies is signed; the US gains possession of the Virgin Islands the following year.
